Visionaries Band Together to Build Greek Orthodox Church
The parishioners of Assumption Greek Orthodox Church take much pride in their house of worship at 1755 Des Peres Road in Town ﻿&amp;﻿ Country.
﻿</b>﻿ ﻿</p>﻿
    ﻿<p﻿>﻿
        ﻿<b﻿ ﻿class="yellow"﻿>﻿

Established in 1940 by Greek immigrants and their children, the church’s founders had a vision of one day building their own Greek Orthodox church from the ground up.  ﻿</b>﻿
    ﻿</p>﻿
    ﻿<p﻿>﻿
        ﻿<b﻿ ﻿class="yellow"﻿>﻿

In 1981, the church moved from its location on Delmar after breaking ground and completing the Hellenic Center facility. IN 1989, the basilica was completed.

        ﻿<b﻿ ﻿class="yellow"﻿>﻿Although the structure consisted of striking architectural details such as cathedral ceiling, stained glass windows and an elevated altar, something was missing- the religious iconography.

After hundreds of weekly fund-raising luncheons and generous contributions from parishioners, Assumption Greek Orthodox Church was finally able to afford an extensive iconography project. ﻿</b>﻿
    ﻿</p>﻿
    ﻿<p﻿>﻿
        ﻿<b﻿ ﻿class="yellow"﻿>﻿

The first phase was completed four years ago and phase two, the most recent stage, was completed in 2003. T﻿</b>﻿</p>﻿
    ﻿<p﻿>﻿
        ﻿<b﻿ ﻿class="yellow"﻿>﻿he project consisted of mounting wall-to-wall paintings depicting Bible stories of Jesus and his mother, Mary. ﻿</b>﻿
    ﻿</p>﻿
    ﻿<p﻿>﻿
        ﻿<b﻿ ﻿class="yellow"﻿>﻿

Each scene is a masterpiece in itself, designed and perfected by artists who live and train in Greece. T﻿</b>﻿</p>﻿
    ﻿<p﻿>﻿
        ﻿<b﻿ ﻿class="yellow"﻿>﻿he large panels of cotton canvas featuring the iconography were then shipped to St. Louis where they were carefully mounted to the ceiling and walls by the iconographers. ﻿</b>﻿
